Association of History Teachers of Portugal
APH - Associação de Professores de História (Association of History Teachers of Portugal) is a scientific and pedagogical association representing history teachers across all levels of education in Portugal. Founded in 1981 and recognised as a Public Interest organisation, APH has for over four decades been a leading voice for the history teaching profession in the country.
Why the APH is Co-Organising and -Hosting the Conference
APH and EuroClio share a deep commitment to renewing history education - making it more inclusive, critical, and reflective of the diverse perspectives that shape our world. "Changing the Gaze" speaks directly to APH's ongoing work to open new horizons in history teaching, challenge entrenched narratives, and disseminate dialogue about more empathetic and open-minded views of culture and shared history across national, European, and international contexts. Co-organising this conference with EuroClio is a natural expression of that shared mission, and an opportunity to bring the Portuguese experience into a broader European conversation.
The Work of Associação de Professores de História
APH supports history teachers through professional development, research, and advocacy. The association runs an accredited teacher-training centre offering a wide range of courses and workshops, organises national congresses, conferences, and study visits, and promotes student engagement through initiatives such as the History Olympiads. APH also publishes the journal AmPHora, produces teaching resources - including materials on underrepresented histories such as slavery in the Portuguese Empire and women in Portuguese history - and actively engages in public debate on education policy. At the international level, APH builds partnerships with associations and institutions across Europe and beyond to promote cross-border exchange in history education.
